Your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may be slightly tender for several days. This tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm. You can have post operative pain for up to one week following your root canal. Do not chew food on the affected side until your endodontic therapy is completed and your tooth is covered with a permanent protective restoration provided by your restorative dentist.
The temporary filing is not meant to withstand normal chewing forces. Please avoid hard or sticky foods.
It is normal to have discomfort after root canal therapy. The pain will normally peak within 48 hours and then gradually subside. You can have post operative pain for up to one week following your root canal. If you experience discomfort following the treatment take Ibuprofen (Advil), (Aleve) or (Motrin), every 4 to 6 hours for the first 48 hours unless contraindicated, in which case Tylenol will be advised. The doctor may also prescribe additional pain medication. Antibiotics and any other medications prescribed must be taken as directed. Please report any extreme discomfort or swelling to the office.
You can brush and floss the tooth as you would normally; however, if the temporary filling extends in between the contact surface, gently pull the floss in between the contact and drag the floss out to ensure the temporary filling does not dislodge.
